Suspects arrested

2017-06-28 06:00

The Bloemfontein police reports that they have arrested 15 people following the burning of the Bloemfontein City Hall.

It is unclear if they belong to the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), whose members have been on a month-long strike over a range of demands, which include a salary hike.

  • Possible charges include the contravention of an interim court interdict, arson and public violence.

The Mangaung Metro authority obtained an interim court interdict in the Labour Court on 9 June, declaring the strike unprotected.

Mayor Olly Mlamleli stated that violence prompted the municipal authority to take legal action against the union, whose members have been on strike since the middle of May.
