At least 202 suspects are reported to have been arrested during the #KimberleyTotalShutDown protest actions since Thursday (12/07).

They appeared in the Kimberley and Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court.

This is according to police spokesperson, Lt Col. Mashay Gamieldien, who said that 47 people who were arrested for contravening the Regulation of Gatherings Act were released on free bail.

Their cases were postponed to 24 August, when they will appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court.

“The 13 suspects who were charged for business robbery and possession of stolen goods were released on bail of R200 and R300, and their cases were also postponed until 24 August,” Gamieldien said.

In Galeshewe, 70 of the 133 people who were arrested on charges of business robbery and the possession of stolen goods were transported to the Department of Correctional Services because they could not pay the bail, stated Gamieldien.

“The other 63 persons who were arrested for contravening the Regulation of Gatherings Act were released on free bail and their cases were postponed to 24 August.”

Gamieldien rated the situation in the Greater Kimberley as quiet, with high police visibility being maintained in all areas.

“Schools reopened as normal and all shopping complexes and businesses in the central business district are operational,” Gamieldien gave the assurance.
