The Bloem Show is in full swing and is expected to climax this weekend.

Jam-packed entertainment is lined up to bring the curtain down on this spectacle which marks 136 years of existence this year.

According to Elmarie Prinsloo, chief executive officer, the event still shows growth that is essential for improving the socio-economy of the central region.

The positive outlook is measured by the ongoing support of patrons as exhibitors and by the high interest from the public.

Prinsloo said a total of 280 exhibitors have descent on the venue in Bloemfontein.

To ensure that standard is maintained, she said an independent panel of nine judges have judged all exhibitors over two days – on Friday (26/04) and Saturday (27/04).

“The quality of exhibitions is really good, according to the judges. Aspects such as marketing, neatness and general impression were considered during the judging process,” said Prinsloo.

This year’s edition of the show sees the effort of the creation of the world’s biggest candy floss by Coetzer Swart of Visionary Delights in Gauteng.

This super-size candy floss is created on a stick in an attempt to achieve the world record. Swart will continue with this mission on Saturday (04/05) with the first attempt undertaken the previous Saturday.

Prinsloo said the creation of the world’s biggest candy floss on a stick happening live at the Bloem Show is one of the highlights that attendees can look forward to.

“The reason for the double attempts is to make provision for any adverse weather conditions, but it is mainly to give everybody the chance in attending the once in a lifetime opportunity to witness,” said Prinsloo.

The public is also invited to participate in this sharing notion by means of a unique auction fundraising project in conjunction with Visionary Delights and the Bloem Show, which will be conducted in the form of an electronic auction on eBay.

Prinsloo said all proceeds raised via both auctions will be donated to a charity organisation in the Bloemfontein area.

“It is however imperative to note that there can only be one world’s biggest candy floss on a stick and therefore only one auction bid-winner that will have the opportunity to apply for the title of being the person that raised the biggest amount for the world’s biggest candy floss on a stick,” said Prinsloo.

The nine day event of the Bloem Show will also see approximately 15 exhibitors being recognised through certificates for their long service spanning from 15 to 25 years of supporting the show.

The organisers will also present 65 gold awards, 77 merit awards and 17 trophies to the best exhibitions and thereby recognising their value in the growth of the show which is deemed a catalyst for socio-economic change.

Prinsloo said an independent panel of six judges judged the award recipients.

  • This include the 54 food stalls of which four trophies will be awarded in three categories. Visit www.bloemskou.co.za for more information.
