Swimmers bag medals

The Free State Schools swimming team finished in fourth position overall at this year’s South African Schools Swimming Championship and received 39 medals in total.

The team managed to bag 12 gold, 14 silver and 13 bronze medals at the event organised by Sport and Recreation South Africa, in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, Swimming South Africa and National Schools Aquatics. It was held recently in Polokwane with eight provinces taking part.

The performance of the Free State team was attribu-ted to the swimmers who finished in record times.

They are Chloe le Roux (13) in the 400 m freestyle (4:49.75), Luchelle Oosthui-zen (13) in the 100 m butterfly (1:12.15), Luan de Waal (15) in the 200 m breaststroke (2:34.86), Alida van der Merwe (14) in the 50 m freestyle (27.97), Cullen Thomas (17) in the 200 m backstroke (2:16.16), Cobus Moolman (12) in the 100 m breaststroke (1:22.24), Guilma Lausberg (13) in the 100 m backstroke (1:11.44) and Simeon Voster (13) in the 50 m butterfly (29.26).
