Teachers honoured

NOMINATIONS for the 2016 National Teaching Awards for best-performing teachers in the Free State are open. Nominations for the Free State opened on 9 June and will close on 29 July, with the provincial winners qualifying for the national final in the different categories to be announced later this year.

Teachers in the Free State are encouraged to enter the annual initiative that is run nationally to recognise excellent teachers in both primary and secondary schools.

The awards also focus on teachers’ participation in extracurricular activities, human relations and contribution to school development.

The Free State MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe, has introduced three new categories at the provincial level. The categories for primary schools are: Excellence in Mathematics and Excellence in Natural Science and Technology (gr. 4 to gr. 6), as well as the Excellence in English Award for primary school teachers’ who made the transition in gr. 4.

The provincial winners will compete nationally in ten categories.
