HTS Louis Botha in Bloemfontein is buoyant to become the permanent owner of the Lemo Mall High Schools Football Tournament trophy, with its name engraved on it.

The school achieved this feat after winning the competition three times in a row since its inception in 2017.

Louis Botha’s coveted achievement means the sponsor, the Kenworth Group, will design a new trophy for the 2020 edition of the tournament, which caters for u.18 boys’ teams.

The victorious school attained this after a hard-fought win over the gutsy Lekhulong Secondary School in the final played on 13 September in Bloemfontein. The champions, led by coach Norman Ngombane, beat Lekhulong by 6 – 5 on penalties.

Previous runners-up were Navalsig in 2017 and Brebner in 2018.

The two previous years the winner received R20 000, the runner-up R10 000 and the team in third place R5 000. This year the top three teams received more incentives.

Louis Botha got R30 000 for winning the competition and Lekhulong received R20 000 as the runner-up, with Grey College receiving R10 000 as third-place achiever. The three schools also received medals.

A partnership between the Free State Department of Education and the sponsor, the tournament features 32 high schools in Bloemfontein.

Its chief objective is to unearth football talent, consolidate efforts to rebuild a caring generation, create a better future and curb complex social challenges, of which gangsterism involving youth is only one.
