Team cycles to spread hope

2018-03-14 06:02

The cycling team of CANSA’s Tour of Light paid a special visit to the CANSA Katleho Care Home in Lovedale Street, Bloemfontein, to reach out to cancer survivors.

Joined by the finalists of the Miss and Mrs Plus Size is Me pageant for 2018, the team visited the centre on 2 March to spread hope and encourage cancer patients.

The team of 11 cyclists, which is currently on a national tour, visited the Bloemfontein-based centre as part of a gruelling journey of over 1 400 km to Cape Town in support of CANSA.

The team began the journey at the Grasmere Plaza through Kroonstad on the first day, and continued to Bloemfontein on the second.

They will cycle through Colesberg, Richmond, Beaufort West, Matjiesfontein and Paarl before finally ending the journey in Cape Town.

Cecilia Hiemstra, founder of the tour, was diagnosed with leukaemia.

“Our aim is to spread light and hope to others and raise awareness for CANSA. Two other cyclists in the team, Ray Funnell and Lawrence Brittain, have conquered cancer,” she said.

The tour includes numerous visits to hospitals and cancer treatment centres.

When the team arrives in Cape Town later this month, it will be joined by other riders who have overcome cancer.

They will accompany the team to the finishing line at a restaurant opposite the lighthouse in Seapoint.
