The cricket team of the St Andrew’s High School in Bloemfontein reigned supreme in the 2019 Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge for the Free State, winning the series a second time in a row.

The in-form team beat tough opponents – the team of the Sasolburg High School, Voortrekker High School and Grey College – in the provincial final on 9 and 10 February in Bloemfontein.

The event decided the winner to represent the Free State at this year’s national final, which will feature six top-seeded school cricket teams.

The overall winner is guaranteed R110 000 in prize money for the school.

St Andrew’s beat Sasolburg High by 100 runs, Voortrekker High School by 176 runs and Grey College by 3 wickets.

The victorious side finished the competition unbeaten.

The best bowling performers include Pheko Moletsane, who took 3/7 against the team’s old nemesis Grey College, while Naleki Sekhibane took 4/7 against Sasolburg High.

Three batsmen, Ruan Cronje, Corne Viljoen and Henre Koekemoer, were equally influential. Ruan scored 100, Corne posted 58 (not out) and Henre 56 against Voortrekker High School.

This year’s provincial final was played on a round-robin basis, in which Grey College, Goudveld-Hoërskool, Kroonstad Hub, St Andrew’s, Voortrekker High School and Sasolburg High competed.

  • St Andrew’s have also qualified for the Knights franchise final, set to take place at the University of Pretoria (UP) from 15 to 17 March.
