Team Northern Cape was crowned as the winners of the 2017 South African Police Service (SAPS) National Functional Fitness Championship hosted at the SANDF sports grounds in Kimberley from Tuesday (31/10) to Thursday (02/11).

During the championship, the Northern Cape scooped 27 medals, of which 14 is gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze.

At least 400 SAPS participants from all nine provinces, including the SAPS Head Office, competed in this competition of sport and excitement, endurance, physical fitness and strength.

The second place went to Gauteng and third position to the defending champion, the Eastern Cape.

Four of the Northern Cape members, Const. Abongile Zenzile, Sgt Jean Combrink, Capt. Matshabela Seale and Capt. Marlie Strydom, were also chosen to represent the SAPS National Functional Fitness team.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lt.Gen. Risimati Shivuri, thanked and applauded all participants and commended the Northern Cape for a job well done.

During her keynote address at the official opening, the deputy provincial commissioner, Maj.Gen. Henriette de Waal, emphasised to the guests that a healthy body houses a healthy mind and this also enhances service delivery to the community.

“Physical and emotional fitness is a must for the police, as this ensures the enhancement of service delivery to the community,” she said.
