Maruping United FC came out victorious at this year’s Northern Cape Sports Awards event, beating the teams of the Frances Baard u.12 chess team, the Northern Cape u.14 chess team and the Richmond women’s FC in the run as team of the year.

The event was held on 4 October in the Northern Cape Theatre in Kimberley.

Before that they also scooped the title as team of the year at the prestigious JTG Sports Awards on 31 August at the Thabo Noorse Multipurpose Centre in Mothibistad.

The team was formed in 2000 by Nkaelang Tanke and has no sponsorship currently. It manages to stay afloat through winning tournament matches.

This group of like-minded individuals boast back to regional title championships having won the regional SAB League in 2016-’17, however they fell short in the 2017-’18 campaign because the team was brushed aside by Pescodia Porto and De Aar Celtics.

Maruping are currently playing their trade in the ABC Motsepe League. The transition from the SAB League to the ABC Motsepe League took place in the 2016-’17 season and the league has changed the players’ mentality and instilled in them a spirit of no-surrender and commitment.

Maruping United FC will be competing in the first district Nedbank Cup Challenge against the reigning champions Magareng Young Stars on 20 October at the Olifantshoek Sports Ground.

Coach Katlego Tanke said his aspirations for the team would be for them to participate in the last 32 matches of the Nedbank Cup Challenge and become the champions of the ABC Motsepe League for 2018-’19.
