Teams under pressure in PSL

2017-04-26 06:02

Pressure is high on both ends of the Absa Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The mounting pressure at the top of the log is on five top-seeded teams vying for the championship, while at the bottom of the table, it is on eight clubs battling the dreaded relegation.

The five teams under pressure to clinch the title are Cape Town City, Bidvest Wits, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United.

Those under pressure due to being on the wrong side of the Premiership table include two Free State teams, Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars.

They are battling to retain their status in the elite domestic league. The two Free State teams are on the knife-edge, Stars at 14th position and Celtic at 13th position.

They are in the relegation mix along with Orlando Pirates, Ajax Cape Town, Platinum Stars, Chippa United, Highlands Park and Baroka FC.

An interesting factor is that one point separates the five clubs with the potential to be crown champions, including the eight teams in serious danger of being relegated.

Those at the helm are of course guaranteed their Premiership status whatever happens, as opposed to eight languishing in the dreaded relegation zone.

With four and five games remaining before the league ends this month, pressure on teams facing demotion from the elite domestic league is at its highest level.

The remaining fixtures are must-win for Phunya Sele Sele and Stars, as it is for their relegation-threatened counterparts.

Celtic and Ea Lla Koto’s remaining fixtures are against teams fighting relegation battle. The local giants find themselves in trouble due to their inability to turn around their dismal performances in matches played.

Today’s fixture sees Ea Lla Koto tackle Platinum Stars in an away fixture at the Moruleng Stadium.

Kick-off is at 19:30.
