Sometimes a person reaches rock bottom in his or her life.

No school or work, no plans or prospects for the future. When you wake up there is nothing that you are going to do, no plans to go to work or to school. You only see gloom.

At rock bottom, many people can start to wonder how they can beat the system.

Some steal and others just wait for something to fall into their laps. I am told that others intentionally infect themselves with AIDS so that they can get a grant. Others steal and rob. Others just wait and wait without any plan.

Maybe I am speaking from a position of privilege.

Sometimes you do not understand what others are going through, because you have not faced the same challenges.

I can sympathise, but not empathise. But I know that an idle mind is the devil’s playground.

I have been depressed and I know how despondent one can become when one is depressed.

However, I am not one to sit still. If I sit still and do nothing, I fall asleep. I believe there is always something you can do. I like to walk, write and read. Furthermore, there is always a crisis I have to attend to.

I believe assisting people can give you a purpose in life. It helps you not to concentrate on your own problems.

The other day my cousin told me he does not have money for food. I asked him what he is doing to earn a living. He told me that he has applied for a grant.

He is not thinking of anything he can do with his hands or using his mind to earn a living.

Some people recycle plastic, glass, metal and paper.

I know it does not bring in a lot of money, but at least they are able to buy bread.

Even those begging on street corners are better than those who stay at home and expect others to give them food.

Why don’t you get a hobby to keep yourself busy? Why don’t you volunteer your time or service?

At least then you will have something to wake up to.

Staying at home all day and being unproductive makes you feel unworthy.

It strips away your dignity and pride, because you are not contributing to society or yourself in any way. in that there is nothing you are contributing to society – yourself too.

I understand the scarcity of employment, but how can immigrants arrive in the country without money and work themselves up to the point where they are hiring us?

The problem is, we are always waiting for someone to hire us. We are not implementing our skills, qualifications and experience to put bread on the table.

I have never been unemployed. I used to sell all sorts of things to augment my salary.

Maybe I am unfair and I do not understand all the challenges, but I believe you must at least wake up, show up and try!
