This year’s Casual Day salutes everyday heroes

2018-09-05 06:00

South Africans are urged to support Casual Day, which will take place on Friday (07/09).

On this day, people are encouraged to wear casual clothes to work or school by purchasing a sticker for R10.

Casual Day, one of the initiatives of the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), has become one of the most popular and prominent social advocacies and funding campaigns in South African history.

The theme for this year is “Be an Everyday Hero With Persons with Disabilities”.

“This theme can be interpreted in various different ways,” said Therina Wentzel, national director of the NCPD.

“Casual Day is a quantum leap for persons with disabilities to access all the benefits and opportunities that are due everyone in an equal and inclusive society. Since 1995, this initiative has raised and distributed over R300 million to thousands of schools, homes, workshops and projects.

“Casual Day proceeds support the disability units of 11 universities, the South African Police Service and the South African National Defence Force,” Wentzel said.

“The money buys assistive devices and improves businesses’ equity and universal design. It is invested to train people with disabilities, and it is used to help place persons with disabilities in jobs across South Africa.

“For us at the NCPD, businesses that consciously practice inclusiveness are heroes. They are not only heroes for all the people they employ, but for the families and communities of their staff members. They are also heroes of the national economy. We salute them.”
