The Bloemfontein High Court has sentenced three men to 19 and 20 years imprisonment for rape, kidnapping and robbery.

Declan Bell (28), Thato Lefotho (28) and Goodwill Mlaba (27) were found guilty of kidnapping and robbing a 57 year old jogger at gunpoint, as well raping his 55 year old wife.

The court sentenced them on 4 August for the crime committed at the couple’s house in Pellissier, Bloemfontein, on 9 February 2016.

Bell received three years for kidnapping, eight years for robbery and eight years for rape.

Lefotho and Mlaba were each sentenced to 20 years – five years for kidnapping and 15 years for robbery.

Sgt Sinah Mpakane, Free State police spokesperson, said the three armed men accosted the man while he was out jogging and forced him to return to his house.

On arrival, they robbed the victim of his personal belongings while Bell raped his wife.

Mpakane said helpful information led to the arrest of the first suspect, Bell, who later revealed his accomplices, Lefotho and Mlaba.

They were already in custody in connection with other crimes at the time.
