Three honorary doctorates conferred

2019-06-26 06:03

The University of the Free State (UFS) will confer three honorary doctorates to three esteemed figures in South Africa.

These are Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha, Justice Mahube Molemela and Dr. Bernie Fanaroff.

Their recognition will form part of the UFS’s winter graduation ceremony to be held in the Callie Human Centre on Thursday (27/06) and Friday (28/06).

Mofokeng, a vastly experienced practitioner in theatre and television, will receive a D.Litt. honoris causa from the Faculty of the Humanities.

Astronomer Fanaroff will be conferred with a D.Sc. honoris causa from the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

Judge Molemela, Judge President of the High Court of South Africa (Free State division) and current chancellor of the Central University of Technology, Free State, will be conferred with an LL.D. honoris causa by the Faculty of Law.

These individuals will be recognised for strides they have made and positive influences in South Africa.

Fanaroff was instrumental in the realisation of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Telescope project near Carnarvon in the Northern Cape.

Last year he was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Research Foundation.

These accolades are awarded to individuals considered to have made extraordinary contributions, of international standard and impact, to the development of science and for South Africa over an extended period of time, and for the manner in which their work has touched and shaped the lives and views of many South Africans.

The UFS announced that South Africa’s former finance minister, Dr. Trevor Manuel, and Adv. Frans Stroebel will be guest speakers at the two-day graduations.

Stroebel currently serves as the chairperson of the GivenGain Foundation, while Manuel serves as the chairperson of Old Mutual Group Holdings.
