THREE men aged between 23 and 44 years briefly appeared in the Fraserburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday (25/01) on a charge of dealing in drugs.

The three suspects were arrested and charged and they will remain in custody until their bail appearance.

According to Maj. Dimakatso Mooi, the men were arrested during a stop-and-search operation in Fraserburg on Sunday (24/01) which resulted in a police chase after they refused to stop.

She revealed in a statement that the stop-and-search operation had been triggered by a tip-off the police had received concerning two vehicles that were transporting drugs en route from Leeu Gamka.

“It is alleged that while the police were busy with the stop and search operation a white Ford Escort came and the driver refused to stop as instructed. The car sped away and a chase ensued,” Mooi stated.

She said that the suspects were seen throwing items out of their vehicle during the police pursuit.

“The vehicle was eventually stopped and the items thrown out were discovered to be dagga weighing 11,96 kg and 60 Mandrax pills. The drugs are estimated to have a street value or R34 685.”

The Fraserburg station commander, Capt. CJ Prins, lauded the members for the swift response and thanked community members for coming forth with information and helping the police in eradicating the use of drugs and substance abuse as this contributed enormously to the commission of various crimes, including serious and violent crimes.

He added that drugs and drug dealers would not be tolerated in the Fraserburg area. The police investigation continues.

The next appearance for bail application will be on 1 February.
