The De Aar Regional Court has slapped three Vanwyksvlei men, Klaas van Staden (32), Isall de Vis (24) and Machel Riegert (20), with up to 30 years imprisonment for the brutal rape of a 24-year-old woman.

The sentence, which was welcomed by the South African Police Service, was passed on Wednesday (07/11).

Van Staden received 30 years imprisonment, while De Vis and Riegert both were handed 25 years imprisonment.

The incident happened on 5 August last year at about midnight when the victim was on her way home from a sports bar in Vanwyksvlei.

She was accosted by the three men.

They dragged her forcefully into the veld and took turns in raping her.

Capt. Sergio Kock, Northern Cape police spokesperson, said the victim immediately reported the case to the police and the men were arrested hours later.

Bail was opposed by the police and the three men remained in custody until their sentencing.

The police lauded Det. Sgt Jacobus Frits of the Carnavon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for a job well done.

The police trust that this incident will make women aware that it is unsafe to walk alone in secluded dark areas, and especially late at night, as it poses a huge risk to their safety.

“At the same time this sentencing will send out a stern warning to all perpetrators that the police will surely be out there in full force to ensure that no impunity is granted to offenders of such heinous crimes, especially as we are approaching the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence against Women and Children,” Kock said.
