PROVERBS 25:16: “If you find honey, eat just enough – too much of it and you will vomit.” A person can be killed by what he or she eats or drinks. Although food is nutritious, it can also be a poison. There are some people who are addicted to food. Food is for nourishment and also for enjoyment. Unfortunately it is difficult for some people to know when they are full. Sometimes there are certain foods which certain people should not eat. For example, diabetes, hypertension, ulcers, gout and high cholesterol are some of the illnesses that need people to select what they eat. We eat a lot of sugar and one finds sugar in food one will not even think one may find it in, such as tomato sauce. Food in South Africa also have a high salt content. One will even find salt in ice cream. Salt is used in bread to make it last longer.Eating is one of the most enjoyable things in life. There are very few people who dislike food. Even those who are bulimic, will eat and throw up. I sometimes wonder whether or not I am not addicted to food. I love food. It may have been once or twice in my life that I did not have an appetite for food. My father owned a fast-food café. I love take-away foods – fish, chips, fat cakes, fried chicken – you name it. If it drowns in fat, it has my name on it. Now I have high cholesterol and hypertension, among others, to contend with. I love salted snoek too. I can eat it with fat cakes, with pap, on its own . . . I always put extra salt on my food. My pastor always warns us about the food we are eating. The problem is also that we eat more and more of the wrong foods. We eat large quantities and it is so difficult to say no. Obesity is very high in South Africa. We are slowly challenging America as the most obese country. When you look at people, many of them have big stomachs and are just fat. Is it because we do not walk and work as much as we used to do? We are immobile and have machines to do most of the work which our forefathers did with their hands.Anything that you overdo, is bad. It can even happen that one visits other people too often, especially when you are the one who is always visiting and who never play the host yourself. My grandson remarked that my family only visits me when there is an event at my place, and that I am the one who is always visiting. Some people sleep too much. They are lazy. Others like to have parties and entertainment. At these parties they binge on alcohol and food. The golden rule is to do everything in moderation. You do not have to kill yourself by overdoing things. To comment or express your views about the issue highlighted in the column, go to www.express-news.co.za.
