Zaine de la Rey (17) has been chosen as the June winner for Express in the Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month competition.

He was chosen due to his achievements in athletics and in rugby.

  • Zaine, a Gr. 11 learner at the Sentraal High School in Bloemfontein, has been participating in pole vaulting since 2015 and holds a variety of achievements. In 2015 he won a bronze medal for pole vaulting u.15 at the National Secondary Schools Championship in Rustenburg.
  • He also attained seventh position in the triple jump for boys u.15 at the ASA National Track and Field Championship in Bloemfontein in the same year. In 2016, Zaine scored a milestone by obtaining first place in pole vaulting for boys u.16 at the Free State Secondary Schools Athletics Championship, and second position for boys u.17 at the ASA Free State Track and Field Championship.

At the National Secondary Schools Championship held in Bloemfontein, he finished fifth in the u.17 category.

  • He was 15 at the time. In 2017, Zaine won two gold medals in the u.17 category at the Free State Secondary Schools Athle-tics Championship held in March and at the Free State ASA Track and Field Championship.

His sterling performance saw him win a silver medal at the National Secondary Schools Championship held in Durban.

Zaine then participated in decathlon for men u.18 at the ASA Senior Track and Field and Combined Events Championship held in Potchefstroom recently.

He is the national champion in his age group after winning the gold medal.

The decathlon is a gruelling ten- item event staged over two days.
