The Lemo Mall, a new multi-million rand mall with many exclusive retail shops, opens for business in the heart of Mangaung’s township in Bloemfontein on Thursday (27/10).

This involves the first phase of the mall, with the grand opening set for April 2017.

The mall is a much-needed investment to boost the economy in the township.

It is yet another ambitious economic development by a streetwise pioneer who started his entrepreneurial trade selling on the streets. In time, he began venturing into investing in the township by revamping the dilapidated shopping complex and saw the complex sustaining itself through the years, dating from the early 1990s.

The Lemo Mall, located along Dr Belcher Road, is a fully-fledged integrated mall with great access for public transport. The mall is deemed a catalyst for employment in “ekasi” (the slang term for township) and people will be able to shop right at their doorstep. Its establishment comes in handy in addressing the issue of job-creation.

The mall will also serve as half-way house to far-lying newly-established residential settlements east of Bloemfontein.

Numerous established franchises, such as retailers, banks and fast-food outlets, have found their way to this mall. Anchors will include Pick n Pay (the second largest supermarket chain store in South Africa), Pep (a multinational retail store) and Capitec Bank, a South African commercial bank.

Other national retailers are reported to also be involved, providing a quality shopping environment structured along the lines of leading shopping centres in the country, according to the developers.

  • The construction of the mall has a gross leasable area of approximately 20 000 m² and a basement level of approximately 12 000 m².

The ground floor will consist of shops and the first floor will consist of offices. The estimated project value is R228 million.
