Two Free State roads to be revamped

2019-08-21 06:01

The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport has begun with two revamping projects.

The roads earmarked for upgrading are those linking Hoopstad to Bloemhof and Ventersburg to Senekal.

The road between Hoopstad and Bloemhof, a stretch of 31,9 km, also joins the Free State and North West.

According to Hillary Mophethe, spokesperson for the department, these projects will cost the department R115 million (31,9 km) and R228 million (56,2 km) respectively.

She said about 360 people will be employed for 15 months for the upgrading of the 31,9 km road, while 688 people will have a job working on the 56,2 km road.

The projects form part of the department’s infrastructure maintenance programme.

The two projects will create opportunities for SMMEs to actively participate in the provincial economy and invest in human resources through skills development and training programmes in the communities of Hoopstad, Ventersburg and Senekal.

Appointed contractors have been given the green light to start work on both roads.
