The Free State boxing fraternity has received recognition for its role in the sport with two individuals nominated for Boxing South Africa (BSA) awards. The winners, men and women in the respective 16 categories, will be announced at a ceremony to be held at the ICC in Durban this Friday (27/01).The awards recognise the positive impact made by athletes, journalists, managers and officials actively involved in the promoting of the sport during 2016. The ceremony returns to the calendar after more than five years’ absence. The event’s return sees the Free State getting the thumbs-up in nominations of the pair, promoter Lebo Mahoko of Dream Team Promotions and boxer Lerato Dlamini. Bloemfontein-based Mahoko, who marks five years in the game, is a contender for the most promising promoter of the year award, while Welkom-based fighter Dlamini has been nominated in the knockout of the year category. Dlamini made the grade for his upset against Babalo Ncakeni. The gutsy Free State fighter saw off his contender via technical knockout (TKO) in 1 minute 16 seconds into the third round, thus ending the contest scheduled for 12 rounds in March 2016. Mahoko got recognition for persevering to promote the sport by hosting national and international championships – affording a new breed of boxers showcasing their talent and launching professional careers.
