UFS confers degrees

Two honorary doctorates and a chancellor’s medal will be some of the University of the Free State’s (UFS) year-end graduation ceremony highlights.

The two-day graduation event will take place today (06/12) and Thusrday (07/12) in the Callie Human Centre on the Bloemfontein campus.

Lacea Loader, UFS spokesperson, says honorary doctorates will be bestowed on Prof. Paul Holloway (Natural and Agricultural Sciences) and Marius Botha (Law).

A chancellor’s medal will also be presented to Joyene Isaacs (Natural and Agricultural Sciences).

According to Loader, altogether 40 doctorates and 109 master’s degrees will be awarded.

Loader says 19 doctorates and 27 master’s degrees will be awarded to people in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences., while 27 of the master’s degrees are in the same faculty.

The recipients will be recognised for the roles they play in their respective fields.She said recognitions were for the roles the recipients played in their different fields.

Holloway is acclaimed internationally as an expert in the science and technology of surfaces, thin films and nanoparticles, while Botha has played a significant role in financial planning in South Africa.

Isaacs is the head of department at the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. The South African Institute of Government Auditors has nominated her department as the best government department.

According to Loader, Likeleli Monyamane, Leah Molatseli and Dr Imtiaz Sooliman will be the guest speakers at the ceremonies.

Monyamane, a UFS council member, will address graduates during today’s ceremony.

Loader says Molatseli is one of 15 young leaders selected to represent Lesotho as participants in the Mandela Washington Fellowship in the United States.

Last year, Molatseli launched South Africa’s first law e-commerce website, Lenoma Legal, and is the university’s most recent young alumnus of the year.

Sooliman, who will be speaking at both ceremonies, is the founder and director of the Gift of the Givers Foundation.

He has received more than 100 national and international awards, citations, commendations and special recognition for his humanitarian work.

Loader says a total number of 1 226 qualifications, including diplomas, certificates and degrees will be conferred over the two days.
