Varsity clubs lock horns

2017-07-19 06:05

The fifth season of the Varsity Football men’s competition is scheduled to roar into life on 27 July, when eight university clubs lock horns. The Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, is among the contestants that will be vying for this year’s crown.

The Free State institution has been pitted against rivals University of Johannesburg (UJ), the 2016 silver medal recipients.

The CUT lads had their journey to the final ended by Gauteng’s UJ when they beat the Free State team in a semi-final fixture in Bloemfontein. Playing host, CUT will be gunning for revenge on their home turf at the CUT Stadium.

In truth, CUT gave away a game they should have won due to their inability to convert chances created in the semi-final. This failure saw the Gauteng institution profit and ultimately win with 4-3 on penalties after the match ended with 1-1 in regulation time.

Defending champions Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) will host neighbours University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) in the Pretoria derby.
