“John Taolo Gaetsewe belongs to a legion of activists who have worked with dedication to our people. Comrade Gaetsewe’s struggle credentials are not just exemplary, but also worth celebrating.”

This is according to Cllr Sofia Mosikatsi, executive mayor, when she led a delegation of councillors during their visit to anti-apartheid struggle veteran John Taolo Gaetsewe’s family in Maruping on Mandela Day.

On Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday celebrations, Gaetsewe was honoured with a visit for his integrity, selflessness and dedicated service to the people of the John Taolo Gaetsewe district.

Mosikatsi committed towards lending a helping hand to the family, currently headed by daughter Gaelele Gaetsewe in continuous celebration of Gaetsewe’s legacy.

“We have built a house for the family and are looking into turning the house into a museum to house all veterans’ pictures.

We have brought in other stakeholders to see how best they can assist the family,” said Mosikatsi.

Tumelo Mpolokeng, John Taolo Gaetsewe Developmental Trust CEO, who also attended, expressed his wish for more people, in particular the youth, to be influenced by the selfless principles of Gaetsewe.

“Throughout his life he demonstrated no sense of entitlement. We as Trust will do everything in our power to protect the legacy of Gaetsewe, and we will be unapologetic and radical with our approach,” said Mpolokeng.

“We as an institution, took a stance to honour all our veterans in the district, so it is not only the Gaetsewe family who will benefit. We are going to visit the Thabo Moorosi family, Joe Morolong family and many veterans’ families in the district,” said Mpolokeng.

Emphasising the importance of Gaetsewe’s legacy, Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality Mayor Neo Masegela committed on behalf of the municipality to continue its strive to distribute electricity to the family home and assist in bringing back the family that is currently residing in Botswana.

“Like no other, we remain committed to improving the lives of our ordinary citizens even those left behind by our heroes,“ said Masegela.

The team reportedly proceeded to Koppies Village where they celebrated with Maria Sebetjo who turned 100 year’s old.
