Vigilance can protect your child

2016-06-01 06:00

BEING a parent is no easy task, especially considering the challenges faced by the youth of today.

In the light of Child Protection Week, running since Sunday 29 May and until Sunday 5 June, ER24 offers the following tips on what parents can do to ensure their children are safe at all times:

  • Get to know your children. A close relationship or bond with them will help you determine when something is wrong.
  • Let them know they can come to you, should they need help.
  • Educate your children about the dangers they face by discussing topics and social ills they may be confronted with like drug use, the abuse of alcohol, as well as sex and peer pressure.
  • Teach children to never go anywhere alone, and also to never go to secluded areas or anywhere with a stranger.
  • Inform them that, should they feel unsafe around someone, they should try to run away and scream to get the attention of other people who may be in the area.
  • Ensure a healthy family environment. Remember that children watch you and learn from your actions, as well as the choices you make. Set a good example.
  • Ensure your children know their names, your name and who to contact in case of an emergency as soon as they are of age to be able to remember this information.
