Violent robber convicted

2018-02-14 06:00

The Smithfield Regional Court sentenced a robber to an effective 15 years’ imprisonment on Friday, 2 February, after he had been found guilty in separate robbery cases.

Tatolo Johannes Mabele (24) was charged with theft, assault, robbery and burglary, as well as in connection with a crime that had been committed on a farm.

The first incident took place on 16 July 2016 at about 03:00 at the residence of an elderly man in Smithfield. Sgt Yanga Ngcukana, spokesperson of the police cluster, said Mabele had used a deadly weapon to attack the victim, Gert Seekers (80).

“The victim sustained severe injuries to the head following the attack with the deadly weapon, a panga. The accused hit the victim on the head with the weapon when the victim was awakened by the sound of the alarm,” said Ngcukana.

He said some stolen items and the weapon used during the attack had been found in the possession of the accused during the arrest.

The accused had also been found guilty and convicted in a separate case of burglary at a farm, where he stole valuable items and food.

“On charges of the theft of a laptop and food at the farm, the court found Mabele guilty and sentenced him to four years’ direct imprisonment.

“Both sentences will run concurrently.

“Some of the items stolen during a house robbery and a break-in at a neighbouring farm earlier were also discovered at the accused’s residence.”

Ngcukana said Mabele had been in custody since his arrest in July 2016.
