Voters to choose candidates

JOHANNESBURG. – In a bid to prevent councillors being imposed on residents, the ANC has said it would let people choose their own candidates to stand in this year’s local government elections.

“You want representatives to be as close as possible to the communities,” Gugile Nkwinti, national executive committee (NEC) member, told reporters in Johannesburg on Monday (09/05).

This was a response to findings of a commission headed by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. Pres. Jacob Zuma established it to investigate alleged irregularities in the processes to nominate councillors for the 2011 local government elections.

Nkwinti said community meetings would be held to select mayoral candidates.

During the briefing James Nxumalo, eThekwini mayor, highlighted some of his metro’s achievements. It had made major strides with its rapid transport system Go!Durban and with the delivery of electricity to informal settlements.

“This is one of the best municipalities in the country. The metro has a proud record in delivering sustainable water services, even through the periods of drought,” he said.
