Voters to update detail

2018-03-07 06:00

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) encourages all eligible South African voters to update their details on the voters’ roll on Saturday (10/03) and Sunday (11/03).

Information to be updated includes personal details and the change of physical address – a process the IEC terms as an address harvesting project which ensures that voters indeed reside at those addresses.

The updating of details and the registration of voters campaign ensure voters are eligible to participate in the 2019 general election.

To update details at voting stations, citizens must use their bar-coded green ID book, smart card ID or valid temporary ID certificates. The process is in line with the IEC’s preparation for the 2019 election expected to be held between May and August.

A total of 22 612 voting stations countrywide (1 531 voting stations in the Free State) will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Nomvula Mokonyane, Communications minister, South Africa reportedly has a total of 25 899 778 registered voters.

However, according to the IEC, it still does not have the addresses for 2,8 million voters – hence the drive to update details.

Voters can dial 0800-11-8000 from Monday to Friday during office hours to find out where their voting station is.

Voters can also update and review their address at www.-elections.org.za. Click on “myIEC”, then “account” and go to “register”.

Registered voters can also SMS their ID number to 32810 to receive an SMS containing the address of their voting station. This SMS costs R1.
