Voters urged to comply

The electoral commission encourages all eligible South African voters to update their details on the voters’ roll on the weekend of 10 and 11 March.

The commission announced on 8 February that on the specified weekend, all its voting stations would be open.

“This is to ensure all eligible votes are registered in the correct segment of the voters’ roll,” says Sy Mamabolo, chief electoral officer.

Mamabolo addressed the media on the electoral commission’s progress regarding updating the voters’ roll in preparation for the 2019 general election.

He said the voting stations would be opened to assist new voters to register and allow already registered voters who had changed address to reregister in their correct voting district. It would also allow registered voters whose address details are not on the voters’ roll to provide their information.

Mamabolo said voters visiting their voting station were advised to take a copy of their barcoded ID book, smart ID or temporary certificate with them to the voting station.

Voters can dial 0800-11-8000 from Monday to Friday in office hours to find out their correct voting station and ask questions.

Voters can update and review their address on the online facility, available at www.elections.org.za. Click on “myIEC”, then “account” and then go to “register”.

Registered voters can also SMS their ID number to 32810 to receive an SMS containing the address of their voting station. This SMS costs R1.
