TSEKI. Z The Women’s Network of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Tseki, the Kestell Police Station and the Tseki Magistrate’s Court, recently celebrated the closure of Women’s Month with a 3 km fun walk with doeks on their heads. The fun walk started at Phuthaditjhaba, near the Maluti Bus Services depot, and ended at the Tseki Police Station. More than 20 police women took part in the fun walk.

According to Women’s Network organiser, Dipuo Tshabalala, they chose to wear doeks as symbol of embracing the women who had come there before them.

“We met today to acknowledge what was done by the women of 1956.

“We chose to wear doeks because when things go wrong, women will have their doeks on and face the challenge head-on.

“That’s what we need to do when we are faced with challenges,” she explained.

She said the reason they chose to do a walk, was because their job required them to be physically fit at all times.

She added that they were faced with a lot of challenges in the sector.

“We are talking about challenges such as a lack of female staff within the SAPS.

“We do not have enough female officers.

“We need more, because the majority of crime victims are women. They need people who will not treat them as victims, but as human beings. We need people who understand their positions.

“We need to support each other more, as we still have our male colleagues who can’t handle the pressure of being led by a woman.

It’s high time our male colleagues smell the coffee and join us in fighting crime, not gender,” she concluded.

During the fun walk the participants handed out pamphlets alerting people about crime and asking to appreciate women in every workplace.
