Water levels still a concern

2017-02-08 06:01

Water restrictions remain in place countrywide and the Department of Water and Sanitation encourages the public to continue using water sparingly.

The department stated that the recent rainfall was not filling up storage dams in South Africa to expected levels due to the severe drought.

Given the severity of the circumstances, the department said it was constantly monitoring the situation, ensuring that municipalities were implementing additional measures, including restrictions and tariff increases where necessary.

According to the department, the national storage level of dams have improved by 0,8% after the recent rainfall, increasing water levels from 54,2% to 55%.

The situation in the Free State remains worrying and according to the department, water level in the dams stood at 56.7%.

The Bloemfontein system, with four dams serving Mangaung, was reportedly measured at 37,9% last week and was expected to see an increase after the much-needed rainfall over the weekend.

This system is comprised of the Rustfontein, Welbedacht, Knellpoort and Groothoek dams.

According to the department, the lowest level (29,3%) was recorded last year during the same period.
