Week highlights value of libraries

2019-03-13 06:01

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (Liasa), in partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture and Sabinet, will celebrate South African Library Week (SALW) from 18 to 24 March.

The theme is “Collaborate @ your library”.

The national launch will be held at the Sechaba Mahobe Public Library in Botshabelo on Thursday (14/03). The time will be announced. The Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa, is expected to be the keynote speaker to address the importance of libraries.

The theme of this year’s celebration articulates Liasa’s presidential theme: “Libraries: Advancing development through collaboration, partnerships and innovation”.

It is a call to action for people to work together, share resources, form teams and develop relationships and partnerships.

The idea is that libraries and communities from all walks of life will derive mutual benefits from forging relationships.

The presidential theme, which focuses on the advancement of development through engagement with interested parties, emphasises the significant role that libraries can play to implement the global, regional and national sustainable development agendas.

These call for public access to information, access to technology, and lifelong learning.
