Precious Kelebogile Letebele (25) is a biology laboratory technician at the Sol Plaatje University. She has proven to be an inspiration and wants to plough back into the community since her appointment in 2017. Her aim is to continue contributing to the global scientific knowledge through research based on Kimberley, her hometown. Mpho Sekwati spoke to her.

What inspired you to enter the field of biology? I have always been an inquisitive person, and science provides the platform for me to explore.

What is your job description?

My responsibility is to ensure that laboratories and experimental requirements are available.

I also deal with student supervision in the laboratory, the procurement of laboratory equipment and the general management of laboratories.

Where did you study and what is your current qualification? I hold a B.Sc. (Hons) in Biochemistry. I am enrolled for my masters degree in Biochemistry at the University of the Free State. In my research for this degree, I hope to address the issue of antifungal resistance of Candida albicans, a pathogenic yeast.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I love that it is a hands-on job. It not only allows me to transfer my knowledge to students, it also offers me many opportunities for personal and professional growth.

What are the challenges you face and how do you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I face in my career is studying while having a full-time job. To overcome this, I had to work on my time management skills.

What are your future plans? I plan to contribute to the global scientific knowledge through research. I also use my position to inspire youngsters in and around Kimberley.

What advice do you have for young people who are interested in ntering the field of science? Find you passion and pursue it. Do it because you love it, not for the money. Do not let any circumstance or person discourage you. Work hard and trust God to do the rest.
