Women in court

A group of 30 women from Botshabelo are expected to appear in the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court to face charges of allegedly defrauding the South Africa Social Security Agency (Sassa) from an undisclosed amount.

The Provincial Organised Crime Unit comprised of Crime Intelligence, Public Order Policing and the Criminal Record Centre who clamped down on the alleged syndicate of women.

Col. Thandi Mbambo, provincial police spokesperson, said amongst those nabbed was a 41-year-old woman believed to be the mastermind behind the alleged scam.

Mbambo said according to initial investigation the woman allegedly targeted vulnerable unsuspecting people and issued them with fraudulent doctors’ referral letters qualifying them to apply for grants.

“She allegedly charged them any amount ranging from R200 for the service. Various fraudulent documents and stamps were found at her house.

“Unsuspecting victims were made to believe that the said woman was the doctor’s assistant who was authorised to perform these duties whilst the doctor was on leave,” said Mbambo.

Mohodi Tsosane, acting regional executive manager of Sassa, said this scam came to the agency’s attention mid-2018.

He said one of the beneficiaries confessed to having been paid an amount of money to enable her to bypass and forge a medical referral of a doctor known to her.

More arrests are expected to follow as some Sassa officials are also implicated in this network, said Tsosane.
