2018-08-22 06:00

This year’s Free State Women’s Games, named in honour of Nontsikelelo Albertina Sisulu and coinciding with the celebration of her centenary, will take place in Sasolburg in the Fezile Dabi region.

Officially known as the Albertina Sisulu Games, this event will be co-hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the Department of Education.

Exclusive to women, the participants will compete in netball, softball, table tennis and basketball.

All these activities will take place at the Sasolburg High School and the Harry Gwala Multi-Purpose Centre.

A function to welcome the participants will be held on Friday (24/08), followed by the activities on Saturday (25/08).

This event is part of the Department of Sport’s programme, previously known as the Dlala Mantombazana programme.

This programme previously known as the Dlala Mantombazana programmewas developed with the sole purpose of encouraging girls’ participation in sport.

It was started in Harrismith in 2013, and women from all five districts of the Free State participated.

The even part of the department of sport programme started in 2013 in Harrismith with all five districts participating.

The programme has been developed with the sole purpose of encouraging girls’ participation in sport.

“The programme has been renamed as part of the centenary celebration of Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu,” said Mathabo Leeto, the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

“This year, provision has been made to facilitate the participation of girls with disabilities.”

The event supports the government’s call on all South Africans, international communities and the civil society to celebrate the centenary of two icons, Albertina Sisulu (1918 to 2011) and Nelson Mandela (1918 to 2013).

Albertina Sisulu, a notable woman, served in the ANC Women’s League.

Sisulu died in June 2011.

She was a qualified nurse by profession.

Sisulu was an anti-apartheid activist and was married to Walter Sisulu, another freedom fighter who served as secretary general of the ANC.

The theme marking Sisulu’s centenary is a “A woman of fortitude” while Madiba is under the theme “Be the legacy”.

The Albertina Sisulu Games is dedicated not only to Sisulu, but also to women who, like Sisulu, fight for the liberation of women.

According to Leeto, the event also forms part of national Women’s Month, which is celebrated in August.

It promotes the emancipation of women in sport.
