A night of soothing music and meaningful conversation concluded Women’s Month celebrations at the Sol Plaatje University (SPU).

A Women in Leadership gala dinner was held at the university on Friday (31/08).

The event, organised by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in the Northern Cape, was themed “Press4Progress”.

Guests engaged in conversation about various topics, such as partriarchy and rape.

Prof. Mary Jean Baxen, deputy vice-chancellor of the SPU, spoke about her career as an academic and shared words of wisdom with the young women in the room.

The MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba, gave insight on being a woman in politics.

The general theme of the evening was the empowerment of women.

The event formed part of the department’s Greenpoint outreach programme, which included a series of activities undertaken over a three-day period.

Mbinqo-Gigaba and government officials supported the programme.

“Taking into account the socio-historical background of Greenpoint, and relating to women’s heritage of struggle, the activities pay tribute to those whose struggles laid the foundations for women’s rights and freedom today,” said Conrad Fortune, spokesperson to the MEC.

“The project also aimed to transform gender relations and advance the efforts of ensuring gender equality and the empowerment of women in South Africa”.

He further stated that women had historically helped to build resilient communities, and that the events had been aimed at honouring, entertaining and celebrating the women of Greenpoint as pillars of strength in their community.
