Worry about wards

2016-02-03 06:00

MBUSI RADEBE – Bohlokong, Bethlehem:

COMRADES, as we continue our journey through the local political landscape, we have many concerns or views regarding our wards.

Authoritarian decisions are being taken daily because of the abuse of power.

Let us look at the rights of our people who are being undermined.

The Demarcation Board of the municipalities has raised the suspicions of those who see themselves as activists.

My concern is ward 9 in the Dihlabeng local municipality. The splitting of the south eastern part of ward 6 to become part of ward 9 came as no surprise.

Gerrymandering (the manipulation of constituency boundaries in order to gain a political advantage) was resorted to without thoroughly consulting stakeholders. The political parties were not provided an opportunity to engage on the matter.

The practice of promoting incompetent candidates in municipal elections seems immature if one considers that we have had 19 years of democracy. Local service delivery suffers because of this practice.

People should not allow ward demarcation to happen without their approval and understanding.
