THE Virginia Regional Court has sentenced Bongani Mpondo (19) to 21 years in jail for raping and robbing a woman who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol earlier this year.

He was sentenced after being found guilty of rape, sexual assault and robbing the 49-year-old victim on 19 March at the L17 Ricky Ross Farm outside Virginia.

Magistrate Thisloshni Ramdeyal passed judgement following successful prosecution by state prosecutor Ramontsheng Lekgetho.

The sentences will run concurrently.

The court heard that Mpondo had threatened the victim with a dangerous weapon by pressing it to her neck and forcing her to the ground. He subsequently raped her. The victim was returning home from a local dairy.

Passersby who saw her lying at the crime scene alerted the police and emergency personnel. Bongani was arrested after the investigating officer, Const. Themba Jilimba, discovered evidence at the crime scene that included clothes of the accused, a screwdriver and the victim’s mobile phone.
