Young minds from the Northern Cape applied their science, technology, mathematical and engineering skills at the very first provincial First Lego League (FLL) Competition held at the Carnarvon High School on 17 November. Through their exploration at the competition, the learners developed critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills. Altogether 13 teams, consisting of three to ten members each aged nine to 16 years, were challenged to develop solutions to world problems such as food safety, energy and recycling. By designing, building and programming robots using Lego Mindstorm technology, they then completed a table-playing field. The Carnarvon High School’s team, Galaxy Guardians, who were also the host for the day, won the award for the best robot performance and a trophy as the overall winner. The best two teams, Galaxy Guardians and Possies Red, represented the Northern Cape at the national competition held on Friday (30/11) and Saturday (01/12) at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg.
