“Please help me to complete school as I do not wish to end up working as a garage attendant, in a restaurant or be futureless like my peers who give up and fall prey to teenage pregnancy, alcohol abuse or suicide.”

That was a plea from a Ritchie youth, Ipeleng Lombard, whose family struggles to make ends meet since the passing of her grandmother, which also led to her foster case being cancelled.

This Gr. 11 learner is concerned that her dreams of becoming a soldier after matriculation will end in smoke as her aunt, in whose care she was left, struggles to provide for her.

After her parents passed away, Ipeleng was left in the care of her grandmother who passed away in May this year.

Her father already passed away in 2005 and her mom in 2008.

According to Ipeleng, she has been trying to keep her mind occupied through participating in soccer at school.

The only other thing she prefers to do is to stay indoors and read.

“I really want to finish school and make a difference in my life as I can see from my cousin who has matriculated that even matric does not really open doors.

“He ended up getting a job in a restaurant, and then worked in a garage,” she said.

According to the unemployed aunt, Agnes Minnie, she feels helpless as she does not get direct answers or referrals from social workers as to how she can re-instate the grant. Minnie is the sister of Ipeleng’s late mother.

“I am a pensioner and am already struggling to support her as everything is too expensive. Now I feel like I am going to fail her as I cannot buy her the things that she needs.

“I already have the fear that we are heading for tough times because we can already not even afford a full month’s groceries.”
