16 June 1976 uprising

2015-06-17 06:00

“IT is in the past - 16 June, 1976, but memories will ever last.

We saw you in pictures.

We read about you in scriptures.

You brought that real moment when we saw you in videos.

The painful memories you brought to our minds.

Bleeding wounds, deep scars you brought into our hearts.

16 June, 1976 - I just wish that day was never seen because my heroes and heroines were gunned down by white apartheid government of that time on 16 June, 1976.

The youth were gunned down like a white farmer throws down seeds.

When late black Soweto students chanting covered the streets of Sharpeville.

Protesting against the use of Afrikaans language in schools.

16 June, 1976 when our late brothers and sisters were killed striking for freedom they never saw.

But freedom we have today

16 June, 1976 when Hector Peterson was the first to be killed. He was going to become an icon due to his brave act, not made by those white supremists.” - Siphamandla Madlala
