THE 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children is an
international campaign that takes place every year from 25 November to 10
The campaign aims to create an increasing awareness of the negative impact of violence on women and children.

South African statistics are frightening – it is estimated that one out of every six women is regularly assaulted by her partner and in at least 46% of cases, the men involved also abuse the children living with the woman.
A recent national survey by Optimus Study on child sexual abuse and maltreatment found that one in every three youngsters had experienced some sort of sexual abuse by the age of 17 and there are many unreported cases.

South Africa adopted the campaign in 1998 as one of the intervention strategies towards creating a society free of violence.
The campaign continues to raise awareness among South Africans about the negative impact of violence against women and children on all members of the community.

Violence takes many forms - physical, emotional and poverty with accompanying starvation, humiliation and degradation.
Poverty, inequality and unemployment are conditions under which violence thrives. Children who have grown up in an abusive family atmosphere are more likely to perpetuate and even experience more violence themselves in adulthood.,

During the campaign wear a white ribbon as a symbol of peace and the commitment never to commit or condone violence.
Participate in 16 Days of Activism activities, volunteer in support of non-governmental organisations and community groups who support abused women and children.
Many organisations that help abuse victims and survivors need assistance from the public.
Encourage silent female victims to challenge abuse and report child abuse -many women are unaware of their rights while many ofear further violence if they report the abuse.

Speak out, not only during the 16 days, but for the 365 days of each year against violence and abuse against anyone – women, men and children.
