WHETHER you know it as Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, Hermannsburg School, “DSH” or just “HMB”, the school has stood the test of time as a place of excellence in education.

This year we will celebrate our 160th birthday with former pupils, former teachers, staff, members of the board of trustees, and many more friends of the school.

The school was founded in 1856, after the first missionaries had arrived in 1854.

Hermannsburg’s museum houses the rich history of the founding of the school, the first Lutheran mission station in KZN, with many precious artifacts and anecdotes, which tell of the highs and lows of the early pioneers in our area.

Life was tough, when water shortages and power outages cause consternation in modern times - one need only look at the diaries of the teachers and missionaries who were sent to outlying places, to appreciate all our modern-day creature comforts.

Ox wagons and horseback were the popular modes of transport when missionaries first arrived at Hermannsburg, with the first motorcar in the area being owned by a local tradesman called Herr Böhling, in 1914 - of course it was a Model T Ford.

Watch next week’s Greytown Gazette for another installment of snippets from “the history of Hermannsburg”.
