APRIL has two birth flowers – the daisy and sweet pea.

It is said that the name “daisy” comes from the phrase “day’s eye” because of how the flower opens when the sun comes up and closes when the sun goes down. In Latin it means pretty. The most common flowers are white, but can also be found in red, yellow and purple.

Associated with childhood innocence the flower also symbolises stability, sympathy and cheerfulness. They are regarded as the essence of spring and young forever.

Practical use – the leaves and petals are edible and can also be brewed as a tea to soothe sore throats and stomach aches.

In the days of long ago when there were still knights around, suitors would wear a daisy and the women would include a daisy as part of their dress to signify availability.

After a proposal a ring of daisies would be worn around the head to signal the woman’s response.

Legend also has it that a nymph fleeing from unwanted attention turned a werewelf into a daisy.

Said to be discovered in South Africa by a Scotsman Richard Jameson, but stone carvings of the flower, dating back 3000 BC have been found.

Alternate April flower is the sweet pea – the fragrant pastel colour popular plant. It symbolises pleasure or goodbye. The sweet pea was named after the Latin “Lathyrus odoratus” meaning pea and fragrant.

It originated in the eastern Mediterranean region between Sicily and Crete,The original flowers were purple but many cultivars have created many other colours

This perfumed flower is said to symbolise lasting pleasure, goodbye, departure. I think of you, thank you for a lovely time. Also, if given to a friend it means keep secret what you have been told.
