Bore holes ’springing’ out all over

2015-07-15 06:00

THERE are currently four bore-hole drilling companies in and around Greytown as desperate residents do what they can to ensure they are independent of the supply of water through the service provider, Umzinyathi District Municipality.

However, the bulk of the residents of Greytown, Enhlalakahle and surrounds are entirely dependent on both Umzinyathi and Umvoti municipalities – neither of which are really meeting the requirements. For instance, Mbuba residents have not had water or tankers for two weeks, some Enhalalakahle residents claim they have had no water during the “on” periods.

There are currently 44 JoJo tanks in Enhlalakahle, France, Angola and Solomon and a further 20, plus material for the stands have been obtained for Greytown.

In a street-to-street survey undertaken last week by Brian Walker and Vukani Njoko it was found that two more tanks were needed in the township and 10 in town.

However, to add to the frustration of the slow installation of the JoJos despite the shrinking water supply and the drying up of the lake, it has been reported that the Aqua tankers are not monitoring and filling the JoJo tanks as required.

A spokesman for the Umvoti Water and Sanitation Committee said that numerous requests had been made to Umzinyaythi to actively ensure that the tankers were being properly supervised, but this has not been done

Concerned residents have queried why, with restrictions on the amount of water allowed per household, Aqua tankers are filling up from the Greytown water supply and not Muden. Although there is a cost involved the government has provided several million rand to assist the drought-stricken municipalities.

Once again – please save water and reuse wherever possible
