Celebrate Mandela Day, donate 67 minutes

2015-07-08 06:00

“NELSON Mandela spent 67 years making the world a better place. We’re asking you for 67 minutes.” Throughout the world, in recognition of Nelson Mandela International Day on 18 July (Mandela’s birthday), individuals are asked to devote just 67 minutes of their time to make a gesture of solidarity with humanity and a step towards a global movement for the good.

You do not have to wait for 18 July, but can make every day Mandela Day by taking action to inspire change and to promote ubuntu.

The Greytown Gazette would like to hear details from anyone celebrating a 67-minute programme and suggestions as to what can be voluntarily done.

For a start:

• A number of people are struggling as a result of the water restrictions as they are unable to make their way to a JoJo tank, which are so sparsely placed throughout towns and villages. Offer to collect water for them and to assist as needed.

• Winter has kicked in with a chilly vengeance – there are young and old in Umvoti without warm clothes and blankets. Clothing, and so on, can be dropped off at the Greytown Gazette office for distribution to those in need. Last week donated clothing was distributed by Umvoti Aids Centre to 61 children and adults.

A more detailed article on Mandela Day will be published in the 15 July Greytown Gazette.
