Foreseeing the future

2015-04-30 13:53

Sir, A sangoma is somebody who has a gift of foresight - a seer, an oracle, a gift of seeing things that happened in the past and reveal their meaning. In Greytown we are, fortunately, lucky to add another one in this ever-growing number of seers.

In the Greytown Gazette of 1 April, under the headlines “Blinkwater ‘volcano’ to erupt”, the new isanusi warned us of the possible disaster, and the whole of Umvoti froze with amazement.

Some people in the vicinity of the volcano left their homes and sought refuge in far-away places.

The volcano did not erupt. Exactly a week later the Greytown Gazette had almost the similar headlines “Sinkhole on Dundee Road”. I see some similarities here.

A volcano erupts after a long period of underground activity not normally seen with the naked eye, it bubbles under. Some even forget after some time that it ever existed. We often hear people talking of an inactive volcano.

The sinkhole on the Dundee Road eluded even the best known geologists of the area. The sangoma sometimes sees a different vision for example, a volcano, whereas, when this later reveals itself it comes in the form of a sinkhole or die tweede groot gat van Umvoti.

The Greytown seer has a clear crystal ball. She foresaw a sinkhole in the form of a volcano.

It was indeed an April Fool’s joke that proved to be true exactly a week later.

Congratulations to Greytown’s new futuristic oracle.
