THERE are nearly 2000 people in need of assistance to feed their families. Hundreds of people queued for food parcels, donated by Gift of the Givers last week in Greytown.

Under the sponsorship of Greytown Feeding Project the hand-out of the parcels took place at the nearly completed project building.

Project chairman Mr D.R. Aheer told the Greytown Gazette that the Gift of the Givers had donated staple food and toiletries.

Volunteers from the feeding project registered the people as they entered the hall and each was given a Gift of the Givers green bag to collect the items. However, as word spread the numbers escalated rapidly and hundreds lined up to get a food parcel.

To ensure that everyone got at least one or two items, volunteers had to reduce the amounts given as the number of people increased.

The rate of unemployment and poverty in Umvoti is high - this was clearly shown by the numbers who lined up.

Even the next day people from outlying rural areas, who had heard about the food parcels, made the trip to Greytown, but without any luck.

Greytown Feeding Projectand#039;s hall is well on the way to completion however, donations are still required to complete the building which Mr Aheer hopes will open in November.

The project has for many years done an outstanding and impressive job of feeding and caring for disadvantaged members of the community. It is a purely voluntary organisation and the individuals who give so generously of their time are to be congratulated. Many were there on Thursday to assist with the registration of the those in need and hand out food parcels.

One negative note was struck - a number of individuals, who are employed and known to be, joined in to take a food parcel.

Greytown should be very proud of the Greytown Feeding Project and the wonderful work it has done over the years and will be doing again with greater impact once its new home is complete.

More volunteers to assist once the feeding programmes start up again would be welcome. The annual project general meeting is to take place on 12 August
