Go solar, forget load shedding

2015-05-27 06:00

IMAGINE not having to cope with load shedding and its accompanying hassles. There would be no need to rush round looking for candles and lanterns.

Rather make use of the sunny South African climate as Mike and Trish Barrow have done. For them load shedding is a thing of the past with the entire house running on energy created from the sun, except for the heating element inside their solar geyser which still runs from utility power on cloudy days.

Looking at technicalities this is an off-grid solar pv electricity system – 2x4kw pure sine inverters which generates sufficient power for all normal household consumption.

Also part of the installation is a 48v 763amp hour battery which has the capacity to store around 35kwh units. On the roof there are 18X 300w 24v solar panels with a combined total of 5.4kw.

This system was designed by Quintus Coetzee to give the household’s average energy needs of 25kwh per 24-hour period. The system has already hit a high of 29,7kwh and even on a very cloudy day generates enough power.
